Arsene Wenger last night told Sir Alex Ferguson: Your Manchester United side re the best. The Premier League champions can retain their title by taking just a point against Arsenal at Old Trafford tomorrow. And Wenger, whose team trail a distant fourth, admits the table does not lie.
He said: "The 18-point gap is a reflection we have to take on the chin. What people forget is that we were very far behind and we dropped too many points. Man United are world champions, European champions and will be champions of England.
"Everybody has to cope with that, not accept it and come back next year and beat them." United can complete another Double by beating Barcelona in the Champions League final later this month. And after years of bitter fighting over the Premier League title, the French manager insisted this season his fiercest opponents will be worthy winners.
"Manchester United have been better than us without a doubt, the whole season," said Wenger. "They played under pressure, Liverpool won the day before, the next day they come out and they believe they will win. "At the end of the day, you have to say: 'Yes, you are the best' and there is no shame to say: 'Yes you are the best'.
"It's part of sport and England is famous in sport for the fair play. "We have a very promising team who can deliver very soon. If you look at the statistics of the two teams, we have scored a similar amount of goals. In the passing quality in the final third and in the opposition half, we are as good as United."
Arsenal won the title at Old Trafford in 2002 and Wenger hopes seeing at first-hand United lifting the trophy will give extra motivation to his side. "Of course it can inspire the players," he added. "These players want to win but you have to accept Manchester United at the moment is the best team."
