Arsene Wenger's Next Generation of Players

As the transfer window approaches, we are about to see another wave of new Arsenal players come into the first team. The current generation of players has failed to bring home a trophy, coming close but never sealing the deal.

The current generation is about to fade, as players like Denilson, Nicklas Bendtner, Andrei Arshavin, Sebastien Squillaci and perhaps Cesc Fabregas are reportedly on the way out.

The departure of these players will create opportunities for new players to try to succeed where the current team has failed. We already know about the impending arrival of striker Ryo Miyaichi, who had a great loan spell at Feyenoord.

The older generation of players like Aleksandr Hleb and Mathieu Flamini also left in search of trophies. However, these players were unable to achieve personal success at their new clubs, and their decisions to leave ultimately favored Arsenal.

Will a player like Denilson likely be bought by a major team in Spain or Italy when he has failed to prove himself with Arsenal? Denilson has said that he can't see himself in a Chelsea or Man City shirt, but there isn't any reason these teams would consider buying him. If Denilson wants to win trophies in Spain, he would have to go to Barcelona or Real Madrid, but I doubt either would show the slightest interest.

Players like Bendtner also want success, however I fail to understand why he would want to leave England to do so. Surely, winning the Premier League is a thousand times more satisfying then winning the Bundesliga. Footballers truly bemuse me.

Fabregas is likely to leave this summer, but Arsene Wenger will still fight hard to keep him. With Barcelona pressuring Arsenal, Fabregas will likely be let go for a price that doesn't match his true value. This wouldn't be the first time Arsenal has let one if its stars go for less than their true value, and it's reminiscent of Thierry Henry leaving for £17 million when he was still one of the top strikers in the world.

The new generation at Arsenal will likely begin with three new players. The largest areas of need are at striker, midfielder (hint: Scott Parker) and center back. The current reports coming in say Arsenal wants to sign Christopher Samba, and there have been suggestions of players like Falcao, or even Karim Benzema. However, I feel that Falcao isn't the type of player Arsenal needs. The Gunners already have Chamakh, who plays a similar role, but I think signing Benzema would be an excellent move. Unfortunately, the odds of it happening are low as Wenger would have to dish out around £22 million.

No matter who leaves and who is brought in to replace them, surely this season is Wenger's last chance to win a trophy. Just go to Google and type in "trophyless", and Arsenal is what dominates the first page. Should Arsenal end the season empty-handed yet again, get ready to say goodbye to Arsene Wenger.
